Authentic Authority

Tuesday of Week 1 in Ordinary Time
Mark 1:21-28

Jesus and his freshly minted disciples enter Capernaum in Galilee.  And already Jesus is making himself known.  Reading this first chapter of Mark straight through…it is very short…I realize that the pace is exhausting!  It might make a good setting for a Nike commercial;)

We read: Jesus taught as one having authority.

This is a different kind of authority.  What kind of authority is received in hospitality and openness? It is authority that is both claimed and given.  So, not only is there confidence and depth behind the authority of a person, the person on the other end of that authority must acknowledge it and give it power.  I might call it ratified authority.

That is a rare thing
But how comforting
To NOT question the authority of another because the nature of that person’s love for me is pure and palpable

Oh to have even one such figure in a lifetime!
Christ be near!

And maybe you could wear a nametag;)
