of Week 2 in Ordinary Time
1
Samuel 24:3-21 (or the whole chapter to get the real feel;)
The
drama between Saul and David has been playing out over this week…it has been
fun! Saul's conniving seems to know no
bounds. And well, David just won’t give
up on the King…though I’m still wondering what Saul would want with 100
foreskins (see 1 Samuel 18:25…part of the missing verses in yesterday’s
lectionary selection). The point is, I think, that David just won’t go down in
the gutter where Saul is stuck. He won’t
be guided by jealously, fear, lust for power, or ego…at least not yet.
And
then there is Saul’s son Jonathan who is David’s ever-encouraging and
supportive BFF…not in this particular selection but in the overall narrative of
1 Samuel. David is proving his
greatness…but its clear that it isn’t a solo accomplishment. Three cheers for Jonathan!
Behind every good biblical David there is a Jonathan!
To
be a Jonathan-like comrade
To
have a Jonathan-like comrade
Blessing upon blessing
