Thursday of Week 5 in Ordinary Time
Yesterday we heard in Genesis 2 about life being breathed
into Adam and then the gift of the
garden, a garden of plenty. “Just not
that ONE tree!”
God warns.
You are ‘the start’ of something great.
My most
perfect creative idea.
But you
aren’t done…and you aren’t me.
Remember
that.
Today, what God started he brings to completion.
When I read this text,
I like to read it real
slow
…I mean slo-mo.
Adam is, in effect, a proto-human.
Think about it.
Can there be a human race of one?
This is a narrative.
It unfolds.
So proto-Adam sits is his proto-longing.
He knows this humanity thing can’t go anywhere.
He feels the dead end.
Then the humor:
Wild boar?
Long
pause
Deep sigh.
Wild hyena?
Longer
pause
Deeper
sigh.
Let’s try various birds…a peacock maybe?
Even
longer pause
Even
deeper sigh.
And this goes on
and on
and on
All the while the longing increases
The sighs grow more despairing
The incompleteness becomes more and more palpable
Exhaustion takes over
Naming all the creatures is not a simple job
Especially without a creative collaborative team
Just rest
The possibility for whole human life is coming
You will need rest
But just you wait!
Imagine life that begins and ends in a singular being
Imagine that almost unbearable longing
Then imagine what that THIS AT LAST
Will sound like
THIS
… at last
…at last
…at last
PROTO no more!
Human Communion!
With the other
With God
Very very cool!
