Monday of Week 5 in Ordinary
Time
The Temple is ready to be
dedicated and ‘the ark of the Lord and the meeting tent with all the sacred
vessels” will find their new home in the holiest part of the Temple. It is ribbon-cutting time! God has a new and grand home. Finally…one that is stationary so that God can stay put! 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep are sacrificed
for this momentous occasion. Interesting
fact: archeologists have discerned the
elaborate drainage system of the Jerusalem Temple…a system that could handle that much blood!
And then we have the
contrasting movement of Jesus. In and
out of boats, wandering to different ports, trekking through a multitude of
countryside villages, Jesus is meeting and healing as he goes.
I’ve been thinking about where
to focus this Lent. 1 Kings offers a
cautionary tale. The impulse to put God
in a box of my own making is, no doubt, a perennial temptation. I can even make the boxes look real churchy;)
