Abiding Lydia;)

Monday of the 6th Week of Eastertide
Feast of St. Athanasius

See yesterday's post for a homily on Acts 16:11-15

(Funny thing about the Revised Common Lectionary...whenever it has been different from the Roman Catholic lectionary...it seems to either be about pericopes highlighting women or feminine images...so much work to be done - Lydia definitely deserves a Sunday!)

We are at the end of a long discourse where only Jesus speaks.  Abiding and Loving and Being Hated…Jesus has these things on his mind.

Abide in me…stay attached to the true vine.
Love one another…just do it…I’ve shown you how.
You will need all this Abiding and Loving in the face of being hated and rejected.

Being rejected, being thrown out of the Synagogue, might feel like being cut off from the vine.  But it is just the opposite.  The rejecters will suffer from a self-inflicted pruning.  Jesus’ message does not exclude.

Feeling fragile?  Abide.  Abide deeply.

For indeed, everything about is marvelous, and wherever a man turns his gaze he sees the Godhead of the Word and is smitten with awe.
-Athanasius of Alexandria, On the Incarnation
