Jonah 3:1-10
It doesn't happen too often that I remember a homily. But when I read this passage I remembered being in Nashville, TN and hearing this text preached. And now it makes even more sense to me as I recall the satire of the text. The preacher pictured Jonah walking through Nineveh, doing literally, what God asked. Only he was whispering. Maybe Jonah really didn't want the Ninevites to repent.
I like the king for the hero in this story. Contrast the king's gratitude with Jonah's. Contrast the shipmates' adoration with Jonah's. If God can use Jonah...passionless, boring, getting by with the least he can...Jonah. He surely can make some kind of prophet out of me!
No whispering though.
